Claudio Cara was found dead in the kitchen of his Waverly Street North Oshawa home on Feb. 15, 2012. The 56-year-old GM retiree had been stabbed several times; the killer left a knife protruding from his chest, the handle broken off. In November 2012 his son Frank, then 28, was charged with second-degree murder. He was denied bail and held in custody until his defence lawyers produced data from the deceased man’s pacemaker that indicated he’d been killed at a time when Frank Cara was at his grandmother’s house, an alibi confirmed by several other family members. A few days before Christmas 2013, the Crown withdrew the charge and Frank Cara was freed. He has since launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Durham police.
