A 23-year-old Wisconsin man will face multiple charges in connection with the death of his father, whose dismembered body was found last Thursday in a rural area, as well as the disappearance of his still-missing mother, say authorities. Last Wednesday, Chandler Halderson, of Windsor, called the Dane County Sheriff's Office to report that his father, Bart Halderson, 50, and mother, Krista Halderson, 53, had vanished from their home on Oak Springs Circle on July 1, according to a probable cause statement filed with the court. The next day, police found a human torso in Cottage Grove, where Chandler had allegedly been seen driving his vehicle in reverse "with the rear hatch open in a field near a wooded area". On Monday, authorities said they believe Chandler shot and dismembered his father before dumping his remains in a wooded area of Cottage Grove. Police allege he then lied to police, saying his parents had vanished after going away for the Fourth of July weekend, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Last Thursday, Chandler was arrested on a tentative felony charge of providing false information in a missing person investigation, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said in a release. He is being held at the Dane County Jail on a $10,000 bond. His attorney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. On Monday, he was charged with three new tentative felony counts – mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse, and intentional first-degree homicide, online jail records show. At Halderson's bond hearing on Monday, Deputy District Attorney William Brown said formal charges are expected to be filed on Thursday, the Wisconsin State Journal and NBC 15 report.
On January 22, 2022, after two hours of deliberation, a jury found Chandler Halderson guilty of killing and dismembering his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson. On March 17, 2022, he was sentenced to life without parole for these crimes. According to the state prosecutors, Chandler murdered Bart and Krista Halderson because he didn't want to face the lies he told his parents about earning a degree from Madison Area Technical College and about having a job. Chandler's lied too often to fully outline here. On June 29, 2021, Bart called Madison College and requested an appointment to obtain the degree Chandler alleged to have earned but been unable to obtain. During that call, Bart found out that Chandler last attended college in Fall 2020 and owed $2,339. Sometime after this call, Bart scheduled an appointment with Madison College and Chandler for July 1, 2021 at 3:00 PM. At 2:10 PM on July 1st, Bart texted Chandler, "I'm ready whenever you are." Soon after this text, Bart was killed in his home. Krista Halderson was not home at the time of Bart's murder. Chandler texted his mom, "Dad's phone died. Text or call me. And get soda on the way home, I have an extra hour of work". Krista returned home after 5:00 PM. Krista's exact cause of death could not be determined since only her feet and one leg was found, but it is assumed she also died by gunshot. At 5:11 PM, Chandler created a note on his phone labeled "Weekend Chores" with the list: "H202 lemon, door handles, move ur shit upstairs, get a job, clean floor." According to state prosecutors, Chandler dismembered his parents' bodies in the home and tried to cover up his crime by burning their bodies in the downstairs fireplace. Over 230 bone fragments were found in the fireplace, grate, and its ash trap. Many of these bones were identified as human bones including skull, fingers, knee caps, and several teeth. Additionally, blood was found near the fireplace, and surveillance video from a neighbor showing flickering light in that room throughout the hours of midnight and 4:30 AM on July 2, 2021. Neighbors recalled smelling a strong smell of burning and a pungent smell similar to a large pig roast. State prosecutors alleged that, in the process of burning his parents' bodies, the fire almost got out of control likely due to burning fat. A spent fire extinguisher was found in the basement of the home, video surveillance appears to show the fire burning brightly before being suddenly diminished after lights come on in the kitchen. Additionally, the fireplace's casing had a shattered glass pane and heat damage. According to the state prosecutors, when Chandler found himself unable to burn the entirety of his parents in the fireplace, he stored the remaining parts of his dismembered parents in a stand up freezer in the basement of the home until he could dispose of all of their remains around Southern Wisconsin. On July 3rd, Chandler left his mother's feet and one leg in Roxbury, WI. On July 5th, Chandler left his father's torso on a farm in Cottage Grove, WI. Except for the bones in the fireplace, no other parts of Bart and Krista Halderson were found. In the basement, investigators found extensive evidence linked to the crime including Krista and Bert's blood, their cellphones and drivers licenses wrapped in tinfoil and paper towel and hidden in a shoe, spent bullet casings, gun magazines, and a bullet fragment. In the garage, investigators found evidence including human blood-stained garbage cans, cut rope and tape matching that found around Burt Halderson's torso, an axe stinted with human blood-stained axe. In the garage, investigators also found a bone saw frame the handle of an Allway Super Saw handsaw which were linked to the dismemberment of Bart Halderson's torso.
