At this home on December 29, 2014, Phu Lam, 53, killed six relatives and one family friend, including two children under the age of ten. The victims were Lam’s wife, Thuy Tien Truong, 35, her sister, Thanh Ha Thi Truong, 33, her mother, Thi Dau Le, 55, and father, Van Dang Truong, 55, her son, Elvis Lam, 8, her niece, Valentina Nguyen, 3, and a family friend, Viet Nguyen, 41. A short while later, Lam drove to 1608 Haswell Court Northwest and murdered Cyndi Duong, 37. Duong was apparently not Lam’s intended target, as he went to the home to locate someone else. After the killings, he drove to Fort Saskatchewan where he entered a Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant, where he had after hours access in order to complete kitchen repairs, and took his own life. Phu Lam had a criminal record dating back to 1987. In 2012, he threatened to kill his wife and her family. An Emergency Protection Order, filed Nov 6, 2012, revealed that Lam’s wife said he didn’t want her to have friends, or a job. Lam was ordered to have no contact with his wife and her family. Court documents show Lam filed for bankruptcy on Feb. 21, 2013. Files show he owed creditors $481,296. The reason for the financial difficulties and bankruptcy was listed as gambling.

Southside victim 'a wonderful person who will be deeply missed'

Friends of Cyndi Duong say there’s no personal connection between the mother of three and Phu Lam, the 53-year-old suspected of killing her. Duong, 37, was shot and killed Monday evening inside her home at 1608 Haswell Court, the first scene found by police. Police now believe the shooter, characterized by police as having a long criminal history, had already killed seven other victims in a north Edmonton home.
