The bodies of Richard Jones, 68, and his wife, Dianna Mah-Jones, 64, were discovered in their home at 1243 West 64th Ave. Surveillance video shows Rocky Rambo Wei Nam Kam purchasing a number of items at a Canadian Tire store on Sept. 13, 2017, nearly two weeks before the murder. The Crown theory is that Kam bought a hatchet at the store of the type that was used in the apparently random attack on the couple. A bloody hatchet was seized by police from the front yard of the home along with a knife. The murder weapon was traced back to the Canadian tire purchase, and associated with Kam's credit card purchase. Kam was interrogated by the RCMP for 9 hours before confessing. Rocky Rambo saw Mah-Jones taking groceries out of her car. “I cover her mouth … I moved my hand down her throat to try to stop her from screaming, and when that didn’t work I use my other hand on her throat … I just tried to choke her,” he testified, according to Global News. “After she stopped moving, I pick up my pocket knife … I’m not sure of order … I believe I stabbed her.” Then he heard Jones. “As soon as Mr. Jones walk into kitchen, I stab him … I just keep stabbing him. It goes on for a while … [I] thought in my head, ‘how come he didn’t die?’ When he tried to stand up, I’m not sure if I stab him or push him to floor.” He added: “[I] go to living room, pick up hatchet. I use hatchet and chopped him on the neck.” Kam slashed Jones more than 100 times and cut Mah-Jones’ throat, then ate a peach and drank milk from the couple’s fridge before he dragged the victims' bodies into a shower stall in their home. That's where they were eventually found, water still running. Mah-Jones coworkers, immediately concerned by her absence the following morning, arrived to check in on the home, and were the first to call emergency services after seeing a trail of blood in the doorway. Mah-Jones was a well respected occupational therapist with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), working at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre and Vancouver General Hospital. In 2015, she was named the Outstanding Occupational Therapist of the Year by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists BC, and was honoured as this year’s VCH and Provincial Healthcare Hero. She was also a dedicated dancer. Her husband, Richard Jones was physically disabled and ran an airbnb out of the home. Both were just beginning to enjoy their retirement. Kam admitted he killed the couple in their Marpole home, but entered not guilty pleas to both counts. His lawyer argued that Kam was in an altered state at the time of the killings and believed he was in the fictional world of a video game. The Crown argued that the evidence proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Kam was the killer, that he intended to kill Mah-Jones and Jones, and that he planned the killings. Rocky Rambo was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
