Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children, John, 5, Paul, 3, Luke, 3, Mary, 6 months, and Noah, 7, in the bathtub. Andrea had been suffering for some time from very severe postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis and schizophrenia, and required hospitalization after two suicide attempts, and psychotic episodes. After she was released, she came under the care of Dr. Mohammed Saeed on April 1, 2001. Andrea's husband, Rusty Yates, left for work on the day of the killings, leaving her alone with the children, against the advice of Dr. Saeed. Dora Yates, Rusty's mother, had been scheduled to arrive an hour later to take over for Andrea, but by then, it was too late. In the span of an hour, Andrea had drowned all five children. She started with John, Paul, and Luke, and then laid them in her bed. She then drowned Mary, whom she left floating in the tub. Noah came in and asked what was wrong with Mary. He then ran, but she soon caught and drowned him. She left him floating in the tub and laid Mary in John's arms in the bed. She was initially found guilty of capital murder, but her case was retried on appeal, and she was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
