These crimes occurred starting at 1339 W 83rd St, Cleveland, Ohio, then continued here when Mary and Matthew Barger and their son David, and Matthew’s nieces Helen and Celia moved. The Bargers were caring for Helen and Celia for their divorced military father, who paid them $200 a month. They were said to be somewhat difficult - understandable due to their mother deserting them and having lived their short lives shuttled between orphanages and relatives’ homes. Mary severely abused and tortured the girls, mostly in the basements of these houses. Forced feeding, manual beatings, slapping, kicking, and beatings with objects like a 2’ stick were daily occurrences. They were also submerged in ice water, locked in closets, and slept on the floor with only a blanket, burned with matches and an iron, and made to kneel for prolonged periods on a bed of stones and nut shells. Two weeks before Celia died, she was beaten with a baseball sized rock. The night she died she was beaten, then she and Helen were made to run back and forth across John Muir Park for ~4 hours. By the time Celia collapsed and went to the hospital, it was too late to save her life. Mary served 6 years, Matthew 2 years.
