Famous world traveler, inventor, and writer of poetry, plays, and nonfiction, blind Dr Harry Chapin was murdered in Room 309 of the Colonial Hotel, now a Residence Inn. He was blinded in a sandstorm and later developed a morphine and cocaine addiction due to pain and/or emotional issues. John Haggerty, his murderer, lured him to the hotel room for a purchase. Dr Chapin was killed by a severe blow to the back of the head.
