The younger of two women charged with strangling to death Marlen Ochoa-Lopez and cutting a baby from her womb this month gave birth to her own child, authorities said. Desiree Figueroa, 25, who has been in custody since May 16 on murder and other charges related to Ochoa-Lopez’s death, gave birth Nov. 1 to a child, according to Cook County sheriff’s office spokesman Joseph Ryan. Ryan said Figueroa was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she gave birth. He said the sheriff’s office could not release the gender of the baby, and few other details could be released. Figueroa is currently in the Cook County Jail’s medical wing, Ryan said. While the jail does have special programs that allow controlled contact visits for female detainees and their children, Figueroa does not qualify for that program because of the severity of the charges lodged against her, Ryan said. Desiree Figueroa and her mother, Clarissa Figueroa, each face charges including first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, dismembering a human body and concealing a homicidal death. They pleaded not guilty June 26 to charges they strangled pregnant 19-year-old Ochoa-Lopez and cut her baby from her womb. Ochoa-Lopez was reported missing April 23, and only later was it discovered she had driven to a home on the Southwest Side where a woman she met through Facebook was offering a double stroller and baby clothes. Once inside the home, Ochoa-Lopez was strangled with a coaxial cable and her baby boy cut from her womb, according to authorities. By KATHERINE ROSENBERG-DOUGLAS CHICAGO TRIBUNE
