Quoted from original police record: Man axed to death: Johnson, Shedd Age 48 Colored Fatally assaulted with an axe at about 9:50 PM, 2/16/30, in his home, 1st fl., rear, 3705 So. State St. Investigating officers came to the opinion that this murder was committed by Robert Blakeley, colored, a clandestine suitor of Mrs. Mary Jane Johnson, deceaseds common-law wife. On 2/17/30 Blakeley was held for murder, Mrs. Johnson as accessory, and her son, Ulus Johnson, as a material witness. 4 Dist. Feb. 1930 No Bills on all three.
