Jessie Blodgett, 19, returned home from a cast party for a production of 'Fiddler on the Roof'. She spoke to her mother about two older men who were flirting with her at the party and making her feel uncomfortable. Jessie's mother left for work at around 8am, and Jessie was fast asleep in her bedroom. When Jessie's mother returned home later that day, she found Jessie lying dead in her bed. Jessie had ligature marks on her neck and her hair and clothes were wet, as if she had been washed. An autopsy ruled that Jessie had died from strangulation. There were no signs of forced entry in the home. The police quickly zeroed in on the two men from the party, but they could not tie either of them to the murder. Meanwhile, in the neighbouring town of Richfield, another woman, Melissa Etzler, had been attacked in a park by a young man with a knife. She managed to fight off the attacker and provide evidence to the police to help identify him. The attacker was identified as 19-year-old Daniel Bartelt. As it turned out, Bartelt was a very close friend of Jessie's. The pair were classmates who dated very briefly, but remained friends, even writing and performing a song together on YouTube. Bartelt denied murdering his friend, however, during police questioning, Bartelt alluded to Jessie being assaulted prior to being murdered, which was something the Police were not yet aware of. When police searched Bartelt's home, they found rope, and alcohol wipes in the trash. On his computer, they found some disturbing searches. Bartelt had been watching a film in which a man washed his victim after strangling her. It is believed he was trying to recreate what he saw. Bartelt was sentenced to life in prison. However, he still maintains his innocence. After his conviction, he addressed Jessie's parents, "Buck, Joy, I can’t give you the answers that you’re looking for. I pray for you, for all of you, and I hope that — I believe that — some day we will be before a court that will know that my conscience is clear,” he said.
