Tesluojch Liem Kandong was a diagnosed schizophrenic who began hearing voices shortly after arriving in Canada from Sudan in 2001. On July 17, 2004, a “higher power” told him his eight-year-old nephew, Bomkoth Deng, was using magical powers to harm him. Kandong drowned the boy in a bathtub. A judge found Kandong not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. Court heard Kandong had a history of not taking medication and had been admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act on at least a half-dozen occasions prior to killing his nephew.
