Derek Puffer fatally stabbed his stepfather, sportscaster Billy Powers, and his adoptive mother, Donna Lee Powers, at their Braeside home on July 4, 2013. When police responded, they found Puffer standing naked by the side of the road and later charged him with two counts of second-degree murder. Family said Puffer was living with 71-year-old Billy, who was known as the voice of the Calgary Stampeders, and 64-year-old Donna Lee, who worked at the Calgary Jewish Centre, on and off without any tension. But court heard Puffer suffered from untreated schizophrenia for years and voices in his head told him to kill the couple. A judge found him not criminally responsible for the deaths.
