Jason M. Funk, 27, murdered insurance adjuster Katrina Anne Froeschle, 25. Froeschle was sent to the home on the Hillsborough River to inspect it for Farm Bureau Insurance after the owner reported storm damage to the roof. She contacted her company by cell phone as she headed to the house. The next day, her family reported her missing when they were unable to reach her. When police arrived at the house, they found 19 marijuana plants growing inside. Funk was initially arrested on drug related charges. Later, Froeschle’s body was found by investigators floating in the river 100 feet from the home she had been assessing. At the time that she was found she had been in the water approximately 30 hours. Because of how Katie was found, it is assumed that she had been sexually assaulted however a rape test kit came back as inconclusive. An autopsy showed she had suffered blunt force trauma to her upper body. It is believed she was beaten with a motorcycle muffler. Funk was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
