Mississauga man fatally beat his wife at this apartment, claiming he didn’t know that kicking and stomping her would cause deadly harm. Receives only 8 years in prison. On the night of November 22nd, 2006, Raman Varadharjan, 37, brutally beat, stomped, and flogged his wife, Gnanalakshmi Raman, 29, after accusing her of lying to him. This was not an unusual occurrence for this married couple. The victim had complained to her landlords and neighbours but police were never called. The couple had been married for eight years. It was an arranged marriage in India before they immigrated to Canada in 2004. After the brutal beating, the couple went to bed. Raman Varadharjan gave his wife an aspirin and rubbed some ointment on her legs. When he awoke a few hours later, he noticed she wasn't breathing and called 911. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsy photos revealed the extent of the injuries inflicted upon her. Her body turned purple with bruises. She had seven fractured ribs and scars from being whipped with a coat hanger. The trauma resulted in internal bleeding. Pathologist Dr. Toby Rose, who conducted the autopsy, said that "multiple blows" would have been needed to cause the "recent injuries". The force was "very significant" and would be the equivalent of what would happen if a person fell from a house or had been in a car crash. Raman Varadharjan pleaded guilty on February 19th, 2009 to manslaughter. Court heard how he told a psychiatrist that his culture and religious traditions "justified" his actions against his wife. He remains depressed and remorseful and now understands his actions were wrong. Varadharjan was sentenced to eight years in prison.
