Byron David Smith was tired of people breaking into his home. So on Thanksgiving Day, he parked his truck around the corner so the house would appear to be deserted. He then turned on an audio recorder and lay in wait in a chair between two bookcases in the basement, armed with a rifle, a pistol, and with a tarp ready. 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile Kifer did break in. When Nick came down the stairs, Smith shot him so Nick would fall down the stairs and then murdered him at close range. He did the same to Haile when she came looking for her cousin. The audio evidence and obvious overkill immediately convinced a jury Smith was guilty of premeditated homicide, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
