18 year-old man with history of psychiatric illness engaged police in a standoff that resulted in his death. The gun he used to fire on police was stolen from my apartment. I lived on the first floor of the house (double apartment setup) and the man lived upstairs with his aunt. The day of the incident he and his aunt got into a domestic disturbance, during which she fled and called police. He broke into my apartment and found my handgun, turned on the gas stove and fired one shot in an attempt to blow up the building, which failed. The standoff with SWAT happened soon after, lasting about 3 hours. The first officer on scene nearly took a headshot from the man; the bullet pierced the headrest in the patrol car. SWAT ended up firing on the man in the back door of my apartment, and he was fatally wounded. I wasn't allowed back in until later around midnight, and a detective gave me a card for biohazard cleanup service. His aunt (who survived) instead cleaned up what was left. The day before the incident the man was found guilty of petty theft. In hindsight, I should have realized all of the weird things happening and missing items around my house was likely his doing. Lakewood police kept the gun for about 3 years before returning it to me.
