On February 1, 1974, 11-year-old Shelton Williams was accidentally shot to death while at the home of a friend. Williams and the friend, 11-year-old Pat DeLaune were playing unsupervised , when Williams asked if he could see a gun DeLaune's parents kept in the home. They placed the gun on the bed, but it started to slip off and when Williams grabbed for the gun it discharged. The bullet struck Williams in the chest, killing him.
