Police found 19-year-old Jessica Lynn Hagan dead inside her family's home on the afternoon of Sept. 8, 2015. Through a series of social media postings, Jessica's brother, Daniel, told the story of a family tragedy: their mother, Christine, was responsible for the death of Jessica, who had Down syndrome. In the months before the killing, Christine was diagnosed with terminal cancer and believed she was the only one capable of caring for Jessica. Police said only that "a female relative" intentionally drugged Jessica — but Daniel Hagan said his mother was responsible and she tried to kill herself as well. Police launched a homicide investigation, but Christine Hagan died of cancer before authorities laid any charges.
